Background

Dr. Megan Pendley joined the ¾«¶«´«Ã½ faculty in fall 2022 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Social Work and MSW Practicum Director. Before joining Nebraska Wesleyan, she served as the Social Work Lead for Omaha Public Schools and taught as a part-time instructor in the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s graduate social work program.

Dr. Pendley is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner, and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Nebraska. She is also a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist Candidate. She has worked in a variety of social work settings, including child welfare, medical and school social work, substance use and mental health treatment, and problem-solving courts. She continues to maintain an active clinical practice, working primarily with individuals experiencing trauma, co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns, relationship concerns, Sex and love addiction, betrayal trauma, and involvement with legal and other systems.

Her teaching and professional interests include clinical social work practice, addiction, leadership and ethics, and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into social work education and practice. She incorporates AI-supported simulations and learning tools into her courses and explores how emerging technologies can strengthen student learning, critical thinking, professional judgment, and practice readiness while attending to ethical considerations, equity, privacy, and the importance of human relationships.

Research and academic interests

Dr. Pendley’s research and academic interests include social work practicum education, social work leadership and ethics, multidisciplinary collaboration, trauma-informed practice, addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns, school-based mental health, sex addiction and betrayal trauma, and practice with individuals involved in legal and other systems. She is also interested in the ethical and responsible integration of artificial intelligence and simulation-based learning into social work education, particularly to strengthen students’ critical thinking, professional judgment, and practice readiness.

Service interests

Dr. Pendley’s service interests include supporting social work practicum education, mentoring students and emerging professionals, and advancing school social work practice. She is also interested in professional development, conference planning, community engagement, and service that promotes ethical, equitable, and innovative social work education and practice.
